Powerplant

Powerplant

The Skylane RG currently has an 0-540 Lycoming engine installed, that by design is not capable of developing 300 horsepower. The cylinder and air induction system designs are not capable of achieving per cylinder horsepower required. Lycoming developed the IO-540-K1G5 engine to produce 50 HP per cylinder. The cylinders are designed to provide efficient air flow. Couple that with an air induction system that is tuned to match the cylinders and you have an engine that is capable of a full 300 HP with no restrictions.engine_series_540

The fuel injection system provides an even distribution of fuel to all cylinders. Even distribution means a smoother and more efficient engine. By nature a fuel injected engine is not prone to induction icing. As an added safety feature we provide an alternate air control that can be operated by the pilot in the event of ice, rain or any foreign material blocks in the induction system. Two separate magnetos provide a fully redundant ignition system. No more two mags in one housing, and no more 500 hour inspection of the impulse coupling. The Skylane RG / 300 HP with two unison (Slick) mags utilize a shower of sparks to provide that extra "UMPPHH" needed during start. All of this combines to create an airplane which has the power and performance to haul what you want, at the speed you want.

Installation

Installation

The upgrade consists of installing a NEW Lycoming IO-540-K1G5 engine and New Hartzell 3 blade propeller. The most noticeable change in the outside of the aircraft is the appearance of the 3 blade propeller. At this time, we do not offer ship-out kit on this conversion.

  • Nose gear doors are modified slightly to provide clearance in the wheel well.
  • Fuel system is changed to install two reservoir tanks below the floor boards
  • Electric fuel pump is changed and relocated.
  • Instrument changes involve replacement of the existing manifold pressure gauge with a combination manifold pressure / fuel gauge.

Following Installation, a flight test and final inspection are performed. The aircraft is weighted, washed and prepared for delivery.
