Once again, you ask and we respond. The success of our original PMA Cessna 172 adjustable airbox bracket led us to develop a second PMA adjustable airbox bracket that improves the life of both the bracket and airbox.
Over more than 45 years in business, we've replaced or repaired hundreds of airboxes and airbox brackets and the shortcomings of OEM parts became apparent to us. That led us to develop our own PMA boxes and brackets that address those shortcomings, resulting in parts that last much longer while costing much less.
The most glaring issue with OEM brackets is the variability in unit height - as much as one-quarter inch from bracket to bracket. This can result in a poor fit of the bracket and airbox to the engine. Combine that with common engine vibration and stress on the metal parts increases. Over time, the components can crack.
We solved that with two adjustable locations that compensate for any misalignment of the installed components. With the adjustable bracket, you're assured of a perfect fit that reduces stress on the components, increasing the life of the assembly. This variant of this particular bracket also provides a second adjustable piece where the bracket connects with the existing baffles.
We also made the top section of the bracket from Chromoly steel, improving strength where it matters most. Chromoly steel differs from other types of steel in its higher tensile strength so it can withstand greater forces without breaking or deforming. It also has better corrosion resistance, making it ideal for applications exposed to harsh environments or moisture.
The new Air Plains bracket (APS0555216-16) replaces part number 0555216-16 and is approved for Cessna 172M Serial Number range: 17261899-17267584 and F172Ms (F17201035-F17201514 - produced under license by Reims Aviation in France).

Air Plains introduced its first PMA adjustable airbox bracket in 2022 and is approved for certain Cessna 172L and 172M models as well as for all 172B through 172M models upgraded with the Air Plains 180hp Lycoming O-360 engine upgrade (STC SA4428SW). Air Plains bracket part number APS0552120-2 replaces either 0552120-2 or 0552120-1 and fits all approved models.
Speaking of improved PMA/STC airboxes, Air Plains produced its own line of airboxes for Cessna 172s, 180s, 182s and 188s. As with our line of brackets, we made improvements where we found deficiencies in OEM products including structural adhesive reinforcements in areas of high stress, hardened control arms with a thicker cross-section, and oil-impregnated bronze bushings replacing needle bearings that reduce wear and eliminate the possibility of detached needles being ingested into the engine.
